The Beauty of Autumn!

Fall truly is a magnificent time of year, and I really miss the fact that we now live in a place where the seasons don’t ever really change. I miss the crunch of the leaves, the smells, the rain, the the chill in the air. I was lucky enough for a couple of years, MANY years ago, before our daughter was born, to travel with one of my favorite nanny families to Boston (or actually, just outside of Boston, in a beautiful little town called Weston. It was the most small, idyllic town – like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. I got to experience all of the best times of year there, Spring, Winter, and Fall. However, without a doubt, Fall was my favorite!

The fall in Massachusetts reminded me of what fall was like for me growing up. We took afternoon walks in the brilliant sunlight, crunching leaves, jumping in leaf piles, and enjoying the gorgeous weather. On the rainy days, we cuddled up in warm blankets next to the fireplace, and read a book, watched a movie, or did art projects. It was blissful – and I still miss it now, many years after we have all returned to the West Coast.

The photos I used for these first two pages are of two of my nanny charges – members of our family even then, despite the fact that we started out as a working relationship. By the time they asked me to go to Boston with them, we were family, and they had added their third child to the family – she is the one buried in the leaves – she was almost 1 year old when I took this photo, and she just turned 11 a couple of weeks ago!!! The other is their oldest child, whom I began to care for when she was 2 1/2 and is now almost 17!

Patterned Paper:
My last page in this series, holds a VERY special place in my heart. As you all know, my Dad passed away in May of this year, and I have had a very difficult time with his passing. I was a total Daddy’s girl and I just miss him so much every single day. This photograph is of my Dad as a little boy – I am not sure how old he was, but I would guess maybe 4 or 5.
Somehow, two little bear cubs wandered into the yard – not even sure where they were, home or on vacation, etc. but anyway, there they were, two little baby bears, and my Grandmother let my Dad take them some food. As a mother now, I would be terrified to just let my little child go outside when wild bears were around to feed them – I’d have been thinking….where is Mama bear? Is she standing int he shadows watching thinking – hey, my babies get a snack then I get to snack on that little boy?! But, perhaps, it was not at all worrying to her, just a great opportunity for her son to meet a bear up close and personal! Needless to say, no harm came to him, and see also managed to capture this sweet picture of him.
It is one of my favorite pictures of my Dad – and he was SOOOO cute!!!

Ghouls Just Want To Have Fun!!!!

Miss K absolutely LOVES her Monster High dolls!
She plays with them EVERY day – for long periods of time. She gets EVERYONE to play with her too – Mommy, Daddy, Aunts, Uncles, Friends, etc…..
She loves the movies, the short cartoons, the dolls, everything about them.
I love that the dolls are not Barbies, and that they stress that being different is ok – even a good thing! That they advocate for always embracing your freaky flaws!
These dolls let her imagination go wild – they treasure hunt, go to parties, put on plays and concerts, dance, run, have jobs. They trade clothes, have families, go to the beach, go fro drives in their fabulous monster car, everything she can imagine, and she has a GREAT imagination!!!! I love watching her play – she gets so involved in their “lives” and she shares it all with us. They’ve even been involved in her school work!
Maybe the obsession won’t last much longer, but I am happy that she loves them so much and am thrilled to support her Monster High habit!

Pumpkin Patch Palooza – Brownie Event – October 2014

Every year the Girl Scouts in our area host an awesome fall event called Pumpkin Patch Palooza! It’s hosted at one of our favorite parks – which also happens to have a wonderful pumpkin patch and a “halloween carnival” type of set-up for the fall season. They have a bounce house, Decorate a Cookie, Carnival Games (for which you pay a ticket, but every kid wins a prize), a Haunted House, A Hay Ride, a Train Ride, Pony Rides, A Pumpkin Patch, Face Painting, Panning for Gold, Tractor Rides, A Hay Maze, etc. We go every year and have a BLAST!
The girls this year (only 3 from our troop, but 900+ from all over our area) that came got a free pumpkin, a hay ride, made caramel apples, planted a poppy seed, made a lollipop ghost, and made a jack-o-lantern  pin! They spent a lot of time playing in the pumpkin patch, taking pictures in the fun cut-outs, and just running around together!
We all got a sack lunch (hot dog, juice box, chips, and a rice krispie treat) , and got to explore the rest of the carnival – Miss K must have gone through the haunted house (her favorite each year) about 20 times!
They got to know one another a little bit better, and Miss K has a new “bestie”!!! It was a wonderfully fun day!
The Kit I used for these layouts is by Touched By a Butterfly and it is called “Leaves of Autumn” it’s a super cute, sweet kit!!

That’s What Friends Are For!!!! – A Charity Collaboration for LissyKay Designs

The wonderful thing about being a part of the digi-scrap community is the way we come together from all over the world to raise money for a cause, a catastrophe or a friend in need.
This time we come together for one of our own.

Melissa Melanson-Dawes (aka LissyKay Designs) just underwent her 14th spine operation and now has to face yet another operation. She has had to take her 3rd leave of absence from work and will have to stay on bed rest following this next operation through the end of the year. With all the medical bills and cost of living, the family is not in a financial position to do this, but has no choice as Melissa’s spine damage has worsened to the point that she was losing the ability to walk.

Still recovering from the last round of surgeries, the family now finds themselves in an even worse position than before. Melissa still needs more treatment and the family is facing losing their small condo due to their finances being drained. We hope that you will join in and help the Dawes family during their time of need so that Melissa can continue to receive the life-saving care she requires. They have kept the drastic nature of their situation quite private, but it is at a point they stand to lose what little they have and this will impact the further care Melissa needs.

Many know Melissa has struggled for years, but most don’t know this all started when she was in a car accident as a teenager. Her husband, Alan, works 2 jobs but this barely touches the debt they have had to take on for Melissa’s medical treatment. Doctors believe they finally have a solution to prolong Melissa’s physical abilities and with all things going right, she will be able to work for a few more years. The doctor does not expect her to have many years left of employment and she will have to take a permanent disability.

Many thanks to the 22 amazing designers have come together to help raise money for this wonderful family:

Our Little Graduate!

What an amazing year! We had a few teacher changes, flew in a class made jet, learned about stick bugs, raised butterflies, played, grew, and learned SO much!
New friendships were made, some that will last a lifetime, and we learned how to work as a group, how to share, how to play.
We celebrated Shabbat, We brought special friends to school, we even made a volcano! We danced in a princess ballet, climbed rock walls, made music and art. It was a year filled with new experiences, and lots and lots of wonderful learning and play.
It seems that Pre-K flew by in the blink of an eye! Then, in June of 2012, we celebrated your Pre-K graduation!
We were so blessed to have the Merage JCC Preschool to be our first journey into a world of formal learning.
With gentle guidance, warm hugs, and friendly smiles we were greeted each day, by friends, teachers, and staff.
The Merage JCC in Irvine, will always be a special place to us, and hold an even more important place in our hearts and memories. Thank you all for a truly phenomenal year!

Fall Family Fun!

Fall is our favorite time of year, maybe because we both grew up on the East Coast, but living where we do we had never been able to share it with Miss K.

In November of 2009, we finally had our chance to show her what a real autumn was like. We had to travel to New York, sadly, for Paul’s grandfather’s memorial.

However, our family came together and we celebrated his life, and we enjoyed all of the beauty that the valley has to offer. We explored the rivers, the woods, the fall leaves.

Sights, sounds, smells, it was all wonderfully perfect!

Beauty at the Beach!

Our little girl is a fish…or is that mermaid?
Seriously though, she LOVES the water and the beach! Lucky for us we live very close to the ocean, and have lots of friends who love the beach too!, so we go frequently.
I took these photos on a trip to Baby Beach in Dana Point with Miss K’s cousin Allyssa and her Mom Debi, this past July (summer 2014)
The weather was beautiful, the sand was perfect for sand castles (and an octopus that Debi made!), and the water was even almost warm!
We had sun, sand, food, fun, and friends!!
It was a wonderful day!
